Welcome... At the heart of PJA Summer Discovery....are experienced teachers and staff creating their classes based on topics they are passionate about, and sharing them with your children. Summer Discovery instructors strive to provide quality enrichment programming that is fun and challenging, with the goal of providing “new learning” for students.

Our Program

Program Hours: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm (pre-care available at 7:30 am)

All students must be the designated age for the course and potty trained by start of class.

Lunch and Snack

Bring a vegetarian snack and lunch (meat- and shellfish-free)

and a water bottle.

Start your day early or extend your day at the MJCC

  • PJA Pre-Care: 7:30 - 9:00 am. Cost: $25 per week (pre-registration required)
  • Extended Day: Continue on to MJCC Day Camp! PJA will escort students to the MJCC at 1:00 pm. For ages 3 - grade 4: PJA rate + $136 or $114 for MJCC members

  • Payment/Refund Policy

    Every effort will be made to offer listed courses and instructors. If a course must be canceled, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another class or offer a full refund. There are no refunds after May 1 except for course cancellation. In the unusual case where refunds are appropriate, PJA will charge a $25 processing fee.

    Our Programs

    Leapfrog (Ages 4-6)

    Leapfrog engages young learners in an exploration of math, science, and literacy activities that are hands-on and inquiry-based. These classes nurture your child’s curiosity, allow imaginations to flourish and encourage a love for learning.


    Cooking: Shindig Food
    Are you tired of the same old party food? Well come liven things up by making food that makes your guests say WOW! Lava cake, sloth cupcakes, Yoda soda, and El Salvadorian Quesadillas are just a few of the yummy treats we will prepare. Bring your apron for the week.

    Intro to STEM with LEGOS
    Ages 5-6
    Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects such as: Trains, Helicopters, Treehouses, and Beam Bridges. Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment.

    Magic School Bus® Series: Into the Human Body
    Mrs. Frizzle and her young scientists will make blood, expand lungs and learn about fire safety. Take a field trip to Doernbecher’s Safety Center, ride the Tram and much more!

    Magic School Bus® Series: Land of unicorns, Narwhals & Rainbows
    Come join Ms. Frizzle and explore the magical and mystical “Land of Unicorns, Narwhals & Rainbows.” Our Journey includes unicorn tales, rainbow science, art & much more.

    Mini Masters: Art Adventures
    Gain confidence in self-expression through a multimedia experience! Mini masters unlock their innate artistic capabilities by exploring 2-D and 3-D art forms, such as drawing, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. Learn the methods and styles of master artists are included in each lesson.

    Outdoor Classroom: Art & Discovery 1
    Enjoy art and nature in the outdoor classroom! Spend the day outside creating sun prints, charcoal rubbings, kaleidoscopes, collages and more. Keep a journal and find inspiration in natural elements.

    Sing, Strum, Bang, Play!
    Explore many styles of music & music-making! Come sing, listen, explore musical instruments, and build your own. Sing as a group, listen to music from around the world and learn from guest musicians. Performance of songs we’ve learned at the end of the week!

    Puppet Theatre: Imaginative Storytelling
    Join in on some summer storytelling as we create small and large scale puppets, learn how to bring them to life through theatre, and share our experiences through storytelling.

    Stepping Stone (Entering Grades 1-3)

    Stepping Stone inspires children to explore new and exciting topics that incorporate inquiry-based activities, global themes and project-based work. Students will form friendships with other learners who share their passion for the same topic.


    Accessories to DYE For
    Learn how to take everyday plants and vegetables to make pretty designs on all kinds of natural fibers. Learn how to decorate silk scarves, cotton totes and tee shirts using materials found in nature such flowers, vegetables, and fruit.

    Balloon BLAST!
    Learn all of the basic techniques of a balloon artist, and combine them to create amazing creatures, wearables, and even characters out of balloons! Each student will receive their own Qualatex® Balloon Pump and a bag of 100 assorted balloons.

    Learn how different properties interact, combine and change through fun and hands-on experiments. We’ll melt metal with our hands, create tin hedgehogs, and learn how to dye our own cloth. Experience water science as we desalinate seawater to drink. Study and make ferrofluid, elephants toothpaste and more!

    Girl Powered Intro to STEM with LEGO®
    This course will provide a supportive environment for girls to build engineer-designed projects such as Boats, Snowmobiles, Catapults, and Merry-Go-Rounds. Then use special pieces to create your own unique design! New and returning students can explore endless creative possibilities!

    Intro to Ninjaneering with LEGO®
    Learn the way of Spinjitzu, build the Fire Temple, race Skull Trucks, and encounter the mighty Dragon! Imagine and build unique and fun LEGO® projects with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor while exploring the fantasy world of Ninjago. This is an ideal way to prepare young Ninjaneers for the challenge of Ninjaneering Masters with LEGO® Materials.

    Origami & Japanese Culture
    Learn origami and about Japan through art, music and stories. Create an origami treasure box, birds, and more, while learning basic folds in a supportive environment. We will make decorations for and end the week with our Japanese tea party.

    PJokemon Whoa
    Gotta catch them all! Learn all about your favorite pocket monster. Play Pokemon games, draw Pokemon, make Pokemon cards! Meet some of the real animals that inspired Pokemon. Pikaju!

    Weird Science
    Science is all around us! The foods we eat, our surroundings outside, even the colors we see! Explore the scientific world with a different topic each day. Bugs & trees one day, chemistry the next, even the science of sound. Investigate!

    Mosaic (Entering Grades 2-6)

    Mosaic brings together a broader range of students in an effort to foster and encourage a patchwork of new ideas and lines of inquiry. With mixed-age groups, students learn from their instructor and from one another.


    Calling All (Board) Gamers!
    Love to play board and card games? We will spend the week designing and building our very own board games as well as playing all of our favorite classics! Maybe you will create the next “Exploding Kittens!”

    Fractured Fairy Tale Theater
    Unleash your inner storyteller and spend the week creating a magical fairy tale world with a twist! During this creative class, we will write our own fractured fairy tale, create costumes, build props, and rehearse for a big performance on the last day!

    Harry Potter: Hogwarts House Cup
    Spend a magical week getting sorted into your Hogwarts house and competing for the housecup! Play Quidditch, games, solve puzzles, make potions, practice spells, and duel your fellow wizards and witches to earn house points! Be chosen by your wand and create items in house colors to show your house pride!

    Mermaids, Krakens, & Sea Monsters, OH MY!
    A fascinating class all about the legends and lore of hidden creatures from the sea. Hear the stories while doing wet, wild, and whimsical arts and craft projects and fun games.

    Minecraft®: Build School
    This Minecraft class will be all about the fundamentals of quality Minecraft® building. Explore many different types of architecture from around the world, and learn how to build them! Learn some new and amazing building techniques for interior decorating and design in Minecraft.

    Minecraft®: Powered By Redstone
    Create machines using Redstone circuitry and engineering- one of Minecraft’s® coolest features. Learn a little bit of JSON computing with Minecraft Command Blocks! Come learn the complexities of Redstone in a supported environment, with an instructor who aims to make it easy to understand!

    Play With Your Food, Eat Your Science
    Turn those ordinary kitchen cabinets into a science lab, with this fun and exciting science class. Using all food ingredients we will conduct over 50 experiments.

    Unicorns, Dragons, & Bigfoots, OH MY!
    Although we’ve probably never seen them, there is a lot of history behind these creatures, and many more. Mysterious, creepy, and intriguing tales accompany creative art projects and fun games.

    Soaring (Entering Grades 3-6)

    Soaring challenges learners to broaden their thinking through in-depth study of topics offered by our talented instructors. Classes will be taught with inquiry in mind, allowing students to express themselves creatively.


    The Beauty of Math and Art
    This week we will explore the beauty of math and art. With inspiration from such artists as Sonia Delaunay, Frank Stella, Paul Klee and others, we will learn about how these artistsuse line and pattern in their work and will create our own original works of art using geometric design and mathematical patterns.

    Jedi Masters Engineering with LEGOS
    The Force Awakens in this advanced engineering course for young Jedi! Discover key engineering concepts such as gear trains, worm drives, pneumatics, and eccentric motion. Build projects such as X-Wings, AT-AT walkers, Pod Racers, and other complex Machines and structures from a galaxy far, far away.

    Garden to Table
    Delicious dishes start with great ingredients. Split your time between the kitchen and the PJA Garden to plant, weed and harvest! We will use the harvest to create delicious and nutritious meals. If you like to cook, eat and get your hands dirty, this is the class for you. Please join us.

    Minecraft®: Survival 101
    In this class, we will become true Minecraft Experts of Survival Mode. Learn how to thrive in Minecraft from day 1 by planning short term and long-term goals, efficiently gathering resources, learning how to farm, trade with other villagers, brew potions, and more! Explore how Minecraft survival techniques directly relate to real-life survival skills!
