Mystery Readers

Mystery Readers

Over the last seven months, we have all discovered that there are some activities that just do not translate well to the virtual world, but first graders have discovered one activity that has become even more exciting in distance learning and that is the weekly Mystery Reader. A mystery reader surprises the class by popping into the classroom to read a favorite book of their choosing. This activity was already a highlight for first graders who would be surprised by local family members or members of the school community. In the virtual classroom, people can pop in from faraway places to surprise us! Some recent mystery readers were a 3rd grade friend in New York and a grandparent in Washington!

Welcoming a mystery reader each week is one of the many ways to get young children excited about stories and books. It contributes to the positive sense of community we want our students to feel and the print-rich environment we want to surround them with. Through these experiences, the class develops a shared love for their extended community, for storytelling, and for reading!
