Earth Day in Bloom

Have you noticed the gorgeous new plants blooming in the planters outside the school?

They’re the result of our amazing Earth Day Volunteer Event held on April 22nd, where 24 volunteers—from toddlers to seniors—rolled up their sleeves to transform the space in front of the Schnitzer Family Campus near the PJA entrance. Armed with shovels, spades, and gardening gloves, our team removed dead and dying plants from eight large planters, replacing them with fresh soil and a colorful mix of perennials like lavender, rosemary, marjoram, sage, and pansies.

After planting, each bed was carefully watered to help the new greenery take root. This day of service was made possible thanks to generous support from Repair the World.

The event was a true community effort, brought to life through a collaboration between MJCC, PJA, PJ Library, and the Westside Watershed Resource Center, who also hosted a fun seed ball activity where kids created take-home bundles of native flower seeds.

Not only did participants have a blast, but they also learned some essential gardening skills—from proper weed removal to soil layering and transplanting techniques.

🌿 And this is just the beginning!

Phase two of our beautification project will be a community art initiative led by PJA’s Kehillah Organization. This time, we’ll be painting the planters in bright, welcoming colors to reflect the spirit of our vibrant school community.

🎨 Stay tuned for details on how you can be part of this exciting art event—we can’t wait to create something beautiful together!
