From Alef to Achievement

At PJA, Jewish learning is a journey that begins with discovery and culminates in thoughtful leadership and action. This journey is beautifully illustrated in two beloved milestones: the 1st Grade Siddur Celebration and the 8th Grade Capstone. 

The Siddur Celebration marks a meaningful moment when first-graders receive their very own prayer books, celebrating their growing Hebrew literacy and connection to Jewish tradition. With proud voices and open hearts, they step into a lifelong relationship with tefillah (prayer) and community. This year, our first-grade students each presented a d’rash (speech) that demonstrated their personal connections to the tefilot (prayers) they learn.  

“My favorite prayer that I learned this year is Shema. It is all about listening. Listening is important because if you don’t listen you won’t know what the instructions are.”  - Sophia

Years later, as 8th graders, these same students present their Capstone Projects - deep explorations of topics that matter to them, grounded in Jewish values and a commitment to tikkun olam (repairing the world). Their work is thoughtful, personal, and action-oriented, a reflection of the foundation laid in their earliest years at PJA. Like our first graders, the 8th graders' presentations are in the form of d’rashot (speeches) that connect the service project to a meaningful piece of Jewish text. 

The arc from the Siddur Celebration to the Capstone D’rashot is more than symbolic; it reflects the growth of our students as learners, leaders, and changemakers. It’s a journey of identity, inquiry, and purpose - rooted in tradition and blossoming into action.
